Kieran Fitzgerald will captain Galway in this summer's championship, following Corofin's decision, as county champions, to hand the honour to the experienced full-back.

An All-Ireland and All-Star winner in 2001, Fitzgerald will lead Galway into battle this Sunday when they clash with Mayo in their Connacht SFC opener at Pearse Stadium.

Having won last year's county final, Corofin had the right to name the Galway skipper.

Fitzgerald, a Garda based in Athlone, was in excellent form in Corofin's title-winning season and made his International Rules debut in October.

Galway manager Peter Ford is due to name his team for the Mayo match after training tonight.

Centre back Diarmuid Blake is winning his race to be fit, having been troubled by a hamstring injury, although Ford will have to do without defender Alan Burke and midfielder Paul Geraghty who are both suffering from hamstring injuries.

For the first time since 1998, Galway are meeting Mayo in the first round of the Connacht championship with the winners due to play Leitrim or London in the Connacht semi-final.

This is the sixth year in a row that Galway and Mayo have clashed in the championship with the score standing at 3-2 in favour of the Tribesmen.
