Paul Dowling assesses the Ireland team after a 3-1 win in Moldova.

Randolph, 6

Had virtually nothing to do the first 45 minutes bar pick the ball out of the net for Bugaev’s leveller. Tested more under high balls after the restart. Dealt with Dedov’s early second half shot with ease.

Coleman, 8

The skipper attacked more than defended in the first half down the right channel, and in the latter stages of the second period. But booked after the restart for pulling back Dedov. Set-up McClean to make it 3-1.

Duffy, 7

The Brighton centre half was under-worked in a first half when the ball was mostly in front of him. Made several good interceptions as the home team improved after the interval. But stood strong to prevent Moldova threatening.

Clark, 6

Playing a high line, the Newcastle defender was badly caught of position for Bugaev’s first half equaliser. The Derry native was a little wild in a few challenges. But steadied after the break.

Ward, 6

Came in for criticism for too many long punts against Georgia. But his distribution was much better at the Zimbru Stadium. Supported McClean and O’Dowda well.

McCarthy, 6

The Everton play-maker had a quiet opening period on the right flank. But his low attempt created the goal to make it 2-1. Tired late on and eventually replaced by David Meyler.

Hoolahan, 8

Man of the match. Played the slide-rule pass for Long to open the scoring. Didn’t have the influence he had in the first half in the second period. But offered the guile in the final third as he was involved in the lead-up play to McClean’s second goal.

Whelan, 7

Recalled with Hendrick banned. Fired wide with a first half drive. Tried to link-up play in front of the Irish defence. But also shielded the back four well.

McClean, 8

The West Brom man was involved in the first goal and was then off target with a two first half efforts. Switched to the right wing following O’Dowda’s introduction. It proved decisive as he netted twice in a six-minute spell.

Long, 7

The Southampton man need just two minutes to score his first international goal since netting against Holland last May. In fact, it was his first score in 19 games for club and country. Limped off after 63 minutes with a hamstring problem.

Walters, 7

Inadvertently provided the assist for McClean’s first score when pushed in more central attacking position following Long’s departure. As usual, won his aerial battles and held the ball up well. Booked for his reaction to Dedov’s late tackle.

Subs:

O’Dowda (for Long 65), 6

Made his competitive debut in place of the injured Long. Showed glimpses on the left flank.

Meyler (for McCarthy 80), O’Kane (for Hoolahan 87)

Both not on long enough to rate.
