Young: 'X Facor' like a 'soap'

Will Young has taken a swipe at 'The X Factor', likening the ITV1 show to a "soap opera".

Will Young has taken a swipe at 'The X Factor', likening the ITV1 show to a "soap opera".

Despite shooting to fame when he beat Gareth Gates to be crowned champion of 'Pop Idol' in 2002, the 'Jealousy' hitmaker thinks the programme has drifted too far away from the "nicely naive" talent show it once was.

During an interview on the 'Jo Whiley Music Show', he said: "It's no longer a talent show, it's a soap opera.

"The thing I find saddening is that if you look back to when I was on 'Pop Idol', it looks like it was shot in the 1970s. It looks so old-fashioned and I'm not just talking about the tank tops I used to wear. There was something nicely naive about it."

However, legendary Hollywood director Steven Spielberg admitted he is "completely infatuated" with the series, as he became addicted to it when he was in the UK making the movie of hit play 'War Horse' last year.

He told Empire magazine: "My family became completely infatuated with 'The X Factor'. We watched it all the time.

"I wanted to go to sleep because I was shooting but I'd wind up watching instead of sleeping. I became a sappy devotee."
