Shortlist published for 'greatest ever film quote' poll

The lines "Bond, James Bond" and "He's not the Messiah. He's a very naughty boy" feature in a shortlist of favourite film quotes.

UK magazine Radio Times launched the poll, with utterances from Sean Connery in Dr No, the mother of Brian in Monty Python's Life of Brian and Humphrey Bogart's "Here's looking at you, kid" from Casablanca among those competing for the top spot.

"ET phone home" from ET, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn!" from Gone With The Wind and "You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!" from The Italian Job also feature.

Others on the list include "I'll have what she's having" from When Harry Met Sally and "May the Force be with you" from Star Wars.

Film journalist and broadcaster Barry Norman said of the list: "For me, the power of words in films is just as great as that of visual images and helps to stamp the movie in my memory. And certain lines have a potent effect on me, however many times I hear them.

"Jenny Agutter's 'Daddy! My Daddy!' at the end of The Railway Children always brings a tear to my eyes. Sometimes the best lines from the movies go into the language in the sense that we use them - misquoted or not - in everyday conversation, often without even remembering where they came from."

The shortlist of 50 quotes was compiled by Radio Times staff to mark the release of the Radio Times Guide To Films 2015.

Readers can vote for their favourite from the list or choose one of their own at www.radiotimes.com/filmquotes.
