Saturday’s TV tips

Here's our top picks on what to watch on the box tonight.

Saturday’s TV tips

Student Nurses (RTE Two, 4.40pm)

Student Nurses is a fascinating, observational documentary series which shadows student nurses at different stages of their training.

It reveals the pressures, emotions and challenges they face, both in the classroom and on the wards.

In the first episode, former carpet fitter, Alistair has first day nerves. Children’s nurse, Helen is in unchartered territory and 2nd year, Dany deals with a very poorly patient.

The Shaggy Dog (ITV2, 5.40pm)

(2006) Deputy District Attorney Dave Douglas (Tim Allen) has ruthlessly pursued his career at the expense of relations with his wife Rebecca (Kristin Davis) and children Carly (Zena Grey) and Josh (Spencer Breslin).

A magical twist of fate (or rather, exposure to a top secret, genetic mutation serum) transforms Dave into a sheepdog, giving the selfish husband a new perspective on life, helping him to see the many errors of his ways.

However, to return to his old two-legged life, Dave will first have to outwit the shadowy forces responsible for the serum. Tim Allen’s antics, enlivened with animatronic puppets and computer trickery, should provide a giggle or two for younger viewers.

Keep It In The Family (UTV, 7pm)

Bradley Walsh hosts the game show in which families from Leeds and Manchester go head to head in a series of fun-filled rounds.

Singer-songwriter Heidi Range, former Pussycat Dolls star Kimberly Wyatt, Westlife’s Brian McFadden, X Factor runner-up Rebecca Ferguson, Michelle Heaton of Liberty X fame and music mogul Louis Walsh are the celebrities holding clues to the prizes on offer, and there are performances from Britain’s Got Talent stars Jack Pack and living cartoon artist Ennio Marchetto.

Doctor Who (BBC1, 7.40pm)

Peter Capaldi is back as the eponymous time traveller, and there promises to be no shortage of slick adventures for the Gallifreyan and his long suffering assistant, Clara (Jenna Coleman).

In the first offering it seems the Time Lord has gone missing, which is bad news for Earth dwellers, as a strange extra terrestrial force has frozen the skies.

Clara is desperate to find her friend, but where is he and what is he hiding from? Could an arch enemy with a black hat and Scottish accent be responsible?

The fine supporting cast includes Michelle Gomez, Jemma Redgrave, Kelly Hunter, and Clare Higgins. Game of Thrones fans should also look out for Maisie Williams in an upcoming adventure.

It Was Alright in the 1960s (Ch4, 9pm)

Matt Lucas narrates another nostalgic look back at TV shows from past decades, with clips and reactions to programmes from people not around to watch them at the time.

This edition explores the changing social attitudes reflected on the small screen during the era of flower power, including humorous shows which took liberties in the name of satire, disability being mocked and bulletproof vests being put to the test on live TV.

Featuring contributions by Joan Bakewell, Peter Purves, Valerie Singleton and Melvyn Bragg.

Unstoppable (Film4, 9.00pm)

(2010) In a Pennsylvania rail yard, Dewey (Ethan Suplee) foolishly jumps off a slow moving freight train in order to race ahead and change a set of points.

Unfortunately, the throttle jars forward and the carriages speed down the line without a driver... More worrying, the locomotive includes drums of a highly flammable liquid. Yardmaster Connie Hooper (Rosario Dawson) clears the entire line to prevent a head-on collision.

Further down the line, veteran engineer Frank Barnes (Denzel Washington) and conductor Will Colson (Chris Pine) orchestrate a daring rescue plan to slow down the runaway train before it reaches the notorious Stanton curve, where it will inevitably derail.

Up for the Match (RTE One, 9.45pm)

Des Cahill and Grainne Seoige host an night of music, craic and good old rivalry as Dublin face Kerry on the eve of the All Ireland Football final.

Joined by GAA legends past and present plus a few surprise guests, the show looks back at the highs and lows of the championship and looks forward to what will be a hard fought final.

The X Factor (TV3, 10pm)

The biggest singing competition on the planet returns exclusively to TV3 this autumn with a whole new presenting line up and judging panel.

X Factor veterans Simon Cowell and Cheryl Fernandez-Versin are back to pave the way for new recruits, pop sensation Rita Ora and much-loved radio DJ Nick Grimshaw.

Our favourite Xtra Factor duo, Olly Murs and Caroline Flack are making their return but this time it's for the main show.

Copland (UTV, 10pm)

(1997) Richly characterised thriller in which a struggling small-town sheriff battles with corruption.

When he is granted the opportunity to join an internal affairs investigation, he finds himself facing some difficult personal and professional decisions.

Notable for its star-laden cast, gritty photo-realistic style and unconventional use of Sylvester Stallone as an unattractive, morally apathetic protagonist

The Perfect Student (TV3, 12.30am)

(2012) Nicole Johnson is a well-respected criminology professor.

When one of her students is accused of the brutal slaying of her roommate, Nicole is the only person who believes she is innocent and begins to investigate the murder.

Starring: Natasha Henstridge, Josie Davis, Jay Pickett.

The Hunter (BBC2, 1.50am)

(2010) A family man takes drastic action to salve his emotional wounds in this slow-burning thriller starring, written and directed by Rafi Pitts. Expert marksman Ali (Pitts) lives in an apartment with his wife Sara (Mitra Hajjar) and young daughter.

Full of rage, the father takes out his frustrations with his rifle. The police arrive to tell Ali that his wife has been killed in the crossfire between cops and insurgents – his child’s whereabouts is unknown.

The loss tips Ali over the edge and as he learns the truth about his daughter, he takes aim at the police who he blames for the tragedy then goes on the run with the authorities close behind.
