Saturday's TV tips

GAME SHOW: Pointless Celebrities (BBC1, 6.55pm)

There are plenty of pointless celebrities in the world. Then there are those actually capable of doing things, whether its entertaining the masses or just being excellent in their chosen field.

If theyre also willing to be grilled by Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman in the hope of winning money for a good cause, then they become Pointless Celebrities, and Saturday night TV becomes a far better world for having them around.

The latest double acts hoping to win the contest are Irish singing siblings Jedward, former breakfast TV colleagues Anne Diamond and Nick Owen, sports stars Mark Foster and Kelly Sotherton, and comedians Katherine Ryan and Russell Kane.

As ever, the answers that score the least number of points push the players one step closer to that all-important final game.

FANTASY: Atlantis (BBC1, 7.45pm)

The BBC may have pulled the plug on this fantasy saga, but star Jack Donnelly can see why.

They were pushing what they could do with the budget to the extreme. Last year I know it was 1.4million an episode, he explains.

I can understand the BBCs decision. They can make three shows for that sort of money, so unless its pulling in 11 or 12 million viewers, then I dont know how they can justify it, but I absolutely loved working on it.

Now the fantasy adventure is back for its final run, and news of Ariadne and Jasons wedding plans reach the evil Pasiphae.

She is terrified Atlantis will be lost to her for ever so she resolves to do all she can to prevent the union.

However, her power-crazed quest has devastating repercussions for everyone.

Aiysha Hart, Sarah Parish and Mark Addy also star.

ENTERTAINMENT: Britains Got Talent (TV3, 8pm)

Ant and Dec are back with a new run of the ever popular, latter-day version of New Faces.

As in previous runs, judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, David Walliams and Alesha Dixon will be deciding who of the assorted acts makes it through to the next round and who will be relegated to an early bath.

Its a winning formula that had entertained millions over the past few years, and helped turn the likes of Diversity, Susan Boyle, Paul Potts and Pudsey the dog into megastars.

In the opener, McPartlin and Donnelly welcome the first wave of wannabe stars as they show off their skills in the hope of winning a major cash prize and a slot at the Royal Variety Performance.

FILM: Independence Day (Channel 4, 6.40pm)

(1986) In the run up to July 4 celebrations in the USA, giant alien spaceships hover over key cities on Earth and prepare to wipe out the human race.

Can a cocky fighter pilot, a lovelorn cable repairman and the US president save the day?

Aside from being a great Hollywood blockbuster, filled with amazing action scenes, it has more belly laughs than all of the Star Wars prequels put together.

Forget the OTT gung-ho flag-waving and just enjoy the glorious banter between Jeff Goldblum and screen dad Judd Hirsch.

It helps that Will Smith is at his charming best, while there are some terrific turns by character actors Brent Spiner and Randy Quaid.

The long awaited sequel is now in the pipeline. Sadly Will Smith wont be in it, but Goldblum, Vivica Fox and Bill Pullman are rumoured to be returning. Its due for release next year.

Starring: Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Mary McDonnell, Randy Quaid, Robert Loggia, Harry Connick Jr, Brent Spiner

FILM: I Give It a Year (Channel 4, 9.20pm)

Nat and Josh enjoy a whirlwind romance, and tie the knot.

However, a toe-curling speech from best man Danny at the wedding is the first bad omen and nine months later, the couple agree to counselling sessions with a sardonic therapist.

A depressed Josh seeks refuge in the company of kooky old flame Chloe, who has been abroad for years and clearly still adores him. Meanwhile, corporate high-flier Nat is wooed by charming American businessman Guy.

This is a bittersweet anti-rom com, which deviates from a well-trodden narrative path by quickly declaring its intention to split up the central married couple in order to pair them off with more suitable soulmates.

The gamble that well whoop and cheer all the way to the divorce courts doesnt quite pay off because writer-director Dan Mazer tempers heartbreak with sentimentality.

Starring: Rose Byrne, Rafe Spall, Anna Faris, Simon Baker, Stephen Merchant, Minnie Driver, Jason Flemyng, Jane Asher, Olivia Colman.

FILM: 24 Hour Party People (Channel 4, 12.25am)

(2002) Its a documentary-style biopic about local TV reporter Tony Wilson, who was inspired by a Sex Pistols concert to create Factory Records.

The legendary label reinvigorated Manchesters music scene and was responsible for unforgettable bands such as Joy Division (later New Order) and the Happy Mondays.

Anyone with an interest in music history will love the biopic, and anyone from Manchester will appreciate the historical insight into the creation of the Hacienda club, which helped put the city on the map as an influential music centre.

Plus, fans of New Order and the Happy Mondays will love the film as it goes into great detail about both bands.

Starring: Steve Coogan, John Simm, Keith Allen, Ralf Little, Andy Serkis, Shirley Henderson
