Monday’s TV tips

FILM: The Italian Job (Film4, 7pm)

(2003) Not the classic Michael Caine original, but a loose remake that sees a group of thieves steal a fortune in gold, only to be betrayed by one of their own, leaving their mentor dead.

A year on, the gang plan to take revenge on the traitor and regain the loot.

Remakes of other Michael Caine-led classics in recent years such as Alfie and Get Carter have been universally panned, but this homage to the famous 1969 heist movie holds its own as a surprisingly enjoyable crime thriller.

The trick, one suspects, is that instead of creating a straightforward remake, director F Gary Gray took the source material in a new direction.

Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Edward Norton, Seth Green, Donald Sutherland, Jason Statham, Mos Def, Franky G

FOOD: Jamie’s Comfort Food (Channel 4, 8pm)

Whether you love or loathe Jamie Oliver (and we’ve heard there are those who fall into either category), there’s no denying that he really knows his onions - as well as every other type of food you can think of.

For the past six weeks he’s been demonstrating how to put new twists on old favourites – and those of us who have followed his methods to the very last grain or dribble will probably have put a few inches on their waists as well; Jamie’s comforting recipes shouldn’t perhaps be adopted every day, just when we feel in need of a little TLC.

He signs off with three classics, beginning with ham, egg and chips with a Jamaican jerk rub and caramelised pineapple.

He then serves up a chicken kebab with hummus and mango amba sauce, and finishes off with a mouth-watering three-tiered chocolate sponge cake with nougat frosting.

DOCUMENTARY: The Entrepreneurs (RTÉ One, 8.30pm)

An all-new documentary series that follows a number Ireland’s most successful entrepreneurs as they overcome fear, failure and adversity in pursuit of their ambitious visions.

Brendan O’Driscoll and Aidan Sliney are co-founders of Soundwave, a mobile network that stitches together real time consumption on mobile using innovative tech that indexes all songs played on all players.

Backed by Mark Cuban and ACT Venture Capital, Soundwave is a mobile music-discovery startup founded in 2012. With offices in Dublin and San Francisco, the Soundwave app tracks what songs people are listening to on their smartphones and where in real time.

Built by a team of 10, Soundwave, launched in summer 2013 with the help of actor Stephen Fry and Apple founder Steve Wozniak, has been downloaded over 1 million times since, and is now tracking in excess of 250,000 songs every single day.

The company has tracked over 70 million song plays since launch in 190 countries.

DRAMA: New Tricks (BBC1, 9pm)

Balancing your private life with work is often tricky – something that Steve McAndrew knows only too well.

His father is dying, so he makes the decision to bring him to London, where he can spend his final days close to his son in a local hospice. But how much free time Steve will get is anybody’s guess after he and the rest of the UCOS team are assigned a new case involving the murder of 55-year-old interpreter Agnes Bradley.

A major breakthrough comes early on when a DNA sample taken from her body matches one on file from a teenage boy who once committed a petty crime as a dare. Could the lad and Agnes’ killer be related?

Further investigations reveal that the teen’s mother was a rape victim, and the team begin to wonder if the culprit and the killer they’re looking for could be the same person.

DOCUMENTARY: The Kitchen (BBC2, 9pm)

Have you ever seen the Channel 4 programme Gogglebox? If the answer is yes, then imagine the same format transported to a kitchen, and you have an idea of what to expect from this new, three-part series.

Cameras have been placed in the kitchens of eight families, and have recorded them as they sit, eat and chat together in a room that is often the hub of the home. It’s hoped this will give an insight into 21st-century life.

The series kicks off in the month August, and introduces us to the Barry-Powers blended family from Cardiff, as mum Louise tries to find a way to keep five hungry children happy.

In Staffordshire, the Harrars wax lyrical about their favourite Punjabi recipes, and there’s also a look at the lives of three fitness fanatics, two pensioners, three generations living under the same roof, and two other clans.

DOCUMENTARY: Inside Probation (RTÉ One, 9.35pm)

In a new landmark documentary series, Inside Probation brings unprecedented access to the frontline of our criminal justice system.

For the first time on Irish television, this two-part documentary series portrays the day-to-day work of probation officers across Ireland, monitoring and rehabilitating a range of cases, from people with minor offences, to dangerous criminals and high-risk sex offenders.

This is the story of the staff of The Probation Service, a service that works with some of society’s most chaotic, damaged and dangerous people.

In this series the cases are both shocking and heartbreaking; we see officers deal with cases involving violence, domestic abuse, theft and drug related crime against an increasing gangland landscape, as well as the ongoing and continuous risk assessment of sex offenders.

DRAMA: Glue (E4, 10pm)

This offbeat mix of Skins and Broadchurch is proving to be a real winner – and not just with the teen and twentysomething viewers it’s pitched at, thanks to the intelligence of its script, which comes courtesy of Bafta-winning writer Jack Thorne.

We reach the halfway point tonight, and we’re no closer to guessing who killed poor, unfortunate Cal.

The police’s investigation into the tragedy continues, causing their relationship with the local traveller community to reach an all-time low. Ruth is caught in the crossfire, and her uneasy relationship with Dominic reaches crisis point.

Meanwhile, Eli puts himself in danger by arranging to meet an anonymous caller who claims to have information about Cal.
