Remakes of other Michael Caine-led classics in recent years such as Alfie and Get Carter have been universally panned, but this homage to the famous 1969 heist movie holds its own as a surprisingly enjoyable crime thriller.
The trick, one suspects, is that instead of creating a straightforward remake, director F Gary Gray took the source material in a new direction.
