McCartney kicks up stink over meat
Paul McCartney is kicking up a stink with top politicians at the international climate talks to save the environment by controlling animal wind.
The vegetarian ex-Beatle wants them to consider cutting meat consumption to slow global warming as they discuss climate issues in Doha, Qatar.
The digestive emissions of livestock are thought to contribute to the levels of greenhouse gases around the planet.
Animal campaigner Paul has written to leading figures at the talks warning about the impact of animal farming and in an effort to encourage people to trim back the amount of meat they eat.
“Encouraging initiatives such as Meat Free Monday would make a considerable difference to the future of the planet,” he said.
Governments from around the world are represented at the talks and Paul has written to Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) asking for the impact of the livestock sector on global warming to be considered.
In his letter he said that “although more and more evidence is coming to light showing how the growth of the global meat industry is having alarming environmental consequences, the impact of the livestock sector on global warming does not as yet seem to have been acknowledged” by those represented at the talks.
He went on: “I therefore call upon you to bring this issue to the attention of the conference and encourage the adoption of policy and individual actions, such as a weekly meat-free day.”
