Spectators staked out front-row seats for a trip to a galaxy far, far away, as Pasadena's famous Rose Parade prepares to present an otherworldly tribute to Star Wars.
Today's 118th annual Tournament of Roses will feature director George Lucas as its grand marshal along with special appearances by bad guy Darth Vader, 200 of his stormtroopers and floats depicting the moon of Endor and the garden planet Naboo.
The parade will begin with a moment of silence for former US president Gerald Ford, who died on Tuesday.
The tribute will be repeated before the start of the 2pm Rose Bowl game, which pits Ford's alma mater Michigan against the University of Southern California.
