Arnie has ex Maria's face smudged from painting

Arnold Schwarzenegger has had his ex-wife's face removed from a painting.

The 'Terminator' star - the former governor of California - is said to have been so keen to erase any memory of his marriage to former TV journalist Maria Shriver, 58, that he's had an artist paint over the image of her face on his official political portrait.

The six-foot oil painting originally featured a small lapel pin emblazoned with an image of Maria - whom Arnold split from in 2010 when it emerged he had fathered a love-child with the family maid - and was painted by renowned Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein.

However, in his hastiness, Arnie neglected to ensure the job was done properly and now California Capitol insiders have been commenting on the odd smudge of blue paint that has replaced Maria's face.

Capitol tour guide Richard Granis told the New York Post newspaper: "Whoever touched it up did not do a very good job. It was softball sized, right there on his left lapel."

Another member of the Capitol staff has revealed that Arnold, 67, was so desperate to have her image removed - following the allegations last week that she had an affair with his campaign strategist Matthew Dowd - before its unveiling ceremony on Monday, he failed to have the artist use the same matte paint as the rest of the artwork.

The employee said: "That's what makes it especially noticeable."
