The attempt to refloat stricken log ship Jody F Millennium has been set back at least two days after a cable securing it to a tug snapped.

The ship had to be deliberately resunk to stop it smashing into a nearby sewage pipe at Gisborne, New Zealand.

Salvors dropped the Japanese ship on to the seabed by pumping water into its ballast tanks.

The setback came after a successful attempt on Wednesday night to turn the bow out to sea to face swells of nearly six metres, according to reports.

The cable, with a 250-tonne breaking strain, broke when it snagged on something on the seabed.
