The Nepalese Government has warned Maoist rebels holding 70 police officers hostage that the military will attack if the policemen are not freed.

On Saturday, government troops surrounded the village where the rebels are understood to be holding the officers and hundreds of soldiers have blocked all exits from the Rolpa district, one of the four rebel-run provinces in Nepal.

The Government has now said that it will tighten the security circle around the village if the policemen are not released and their weapons returned.
