The grandson of Ronald Reagan has been sent to a drug rehabilitation clinic for 90 days after he was found with marijuana while on probation.

Defence lawyer Ronald Lewis said Cameron Reagan, 22, would enrol at a rehabilitation clinic based in south California.

Cameron Reagan's father, talk show host Michael Reagan, was not in court yesterday but has said previously that the former president's Alzheimer's disease "has been very tough on my son".

There was no comment from Ronald or Nancy Reagan, spokeswoman Joanne Drake said.

On December 8, Cameron Reagan admitted possession of a small amount of marijuana, which was a violation of his probation.

He was sentenced to six months in jail and three years of probation after he pleaded guilty in 1999 to a charge of receiving stolen property in connection with a car break-in. Police said Reagan and a friend tried to enter parked vehicles by pulling on the doors.

The two had a briefcase, mobile phone, pager, clothing and money stolen from a nearby car at the time of their arrest, prosecutors said.
