Firefighters rushed to European Union headquarters in Brussels today after reports of smoke coming from a staff restaurant, officials said, but no fire was found.
Fire crews were joined by two ambulances and police at the Berlaymont building in Brussels after security at the building called for help to trace smoke in or around the first-level restaurant at the European Commission.
Firefighters and police found no fire after looking in the building.
They also looked in an underground station beside the EU building for traces of smoke.
Security officials said no one had been evacuated from the building, which is home to 2,700 bureaucrats and the 25-member EU executive.
