The Indian army successfully test-fired a ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead today, a move that immediately drew criticism from Germany, Britain and Pakistan.
The test into the Bay of Bengal came amid the biggest military stand-off between India and Pakistan in decades.
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said: "We hope the international community will take note of this Indian behaviour, which is prejudicial to the pursuit of stability in our region, especially during the current situation."
In Britain, Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said the test sent the wrong signals.
Germany’s Foreign Minister, Joschka Fischer, said it could "lead to misunderstandings" and added that the test "sends the wrong kind of signal for nuclear non-proliferation".
