Twelve people were crushed to death when a train ran over them at a railroad station in central India today.

The dead, mostly college students, were getting off a train at the Sukhi Sevania railroad station when a second train ran over them, the Press Trust of India reported.

Sukhi Sevani is a small town neighbouring Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh state.

The victims were apparently arguing with each other as they left their train and didn’t notice the oncoming train, the AajTak television channel quoted railway officer Birendra Singh as saying.

Several others were injured in the accident, Singh said.

Small railroad stations in India often have only one platform and passengers tend to disembark on the tracks.
