China summons US envoy in cyberspy storm

China has summoned its US ambassador after Washington accused five Chinese military officials of hacking into American companies to steal vital trade secrets.

China’s response marks an escalation in a dispute that has deeply angered Beijing over US claims that the Chinese military is illegally helping the country’s massive state industries.

Beijing has already strongly condemned the charges and says it is suspending co-operation with the US in a joint cybersecurity working group. The group was formed last year in the wake of allegations of Chinese military involvement in online commercial espionage. China has stridently denied the claims.

State-run Xinhua News Agency said Chinese assistant foreign minister Zheng Zeguang had summoned US ambassador to China Max Baucus.
