World Rally Championship fields are set to be boosted by second teams from leading manufacturers, according to a top official.
Next season’s regulations limit manufacturers to running two-car teams but with Peugeot having already announced their intention to run a ‘junior’ squad, Rally New Zealand chairman Morrie Chandler has tipped others to follow.
Third and fourth cars for promising drivers were common in the past but with new rules and an expanded – and more expensive – calendar there had been fears youngsters would not be given opportunities in top-class cars.
But Chandler said: “Each world rally championship works team is limited to two cars for 2004, although it’s possible that we may see teams like Peugeot and Citroen enter two teams, primarily for up-and-coming drivers.
“And in the case of Mitsubishi, the two drivers who miss out on the WRC cars, will likely drive Group N cars here.”
The series has been beset by worries over its future since the new rules package was announced, with Hyundai and Skoda both pulling out of the championship and Ford briefly questioning their participation.
However, Chandler has been encouraged by a full entry list for the New Zealand event.
He said: “This is further proof that our rally, despite being the farthest point to travel, is still very popular with drivers.
“Our roads are rated the best in the world by drivers, and we have a proven record of running a good ship.”
