Newcastle’s meeting on Wednesday has been abandoned after officials opted to bring forward a planned 3pm inspection.

Clerk of the course James Armstrong said: “We have had to abandon. Things have barely improved at all today.

“Temperatures on the far side of the track are still at zero and just above freezing in the area generally.

“Any area of bare ground is bone-hard at the moment and we are forecast minus two or greater tonight, with daytime temperatures tomorrow only moving up to plus two.

“It was a fairly easy call I’m afraid.”
