Bill Murray has confirmed he will appear as a ghost in 'Ghostbusters III'.

The 59-year-old actor only agreed to reprise his role as Peter Venkman if he got to be a spectre in the new film.

He revealed: "I said to the producers, 'I'll do it if you kill me off in the first reel and I get to be a ghost.' So now they are going to have me as a ghost in the film."

Murray has high hopes for the new instalment but insists it must return to its comic roots and be more like the original film than the sequel.

He said: "The first 45 minutes of the original 'Ghostbusters' is some of the funniest stuff ever made. The second one was disappointing because the special-effects guys took over. I had something like two scenes - and they're the only funny ones in the movie."

Sigourney Weaver - Murray's co-star from the first two films - has previously hinted she will return in her role as Dana Barrett and revealed that Dana and Peter's son Oscar becomes a Ghostbuster in the story.

She said: "I don't know if I'm going to be in it, I have had a couple of calls asking, 'Would you read the script.' I don't see anything wrong with being in it, although I don't think I will have a big part.

"My little son Oscar - who was kidnapped from me - I think he has grown up to be a Ghostbuster."
