Tobey Maguire may be forced to cancel his starring role in the sequel to Spiderman because of a bad back.
A web of intrigue enveloped the actor as word circulated that he may not be back as Peter Parker in The Amazing Spiderman – the next installment to the top film of 2002 that raked in a staggering $800m at the box office.
Maguire’s spokeswoman said: “After doing two physically demanding films in a row, Tobey has experienced mild discomfort in his back, which is in the final stages of healing.
“With an April 12 start date around the corner, everyone involved wants to be certain he is able to do the intense stunts.”
Following Spider-Man, Maguire worked on Seabiscuit in the role of a racehorse jockey Red Pollard.
He agreed to star in the movie last spring, prior to the first film’s release.
According to Hollywood trade magazine Daily Variety, The Good Girl star Jake Gyllenhaal is waiting in the wings as a possible reserve.
