Two car bombs have exploded in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, killing five people and wounding 18.

The first explosion occurred when a parked car bomb detonated next to an army patrol, killing three soldiers and wounding three civilians.

A spokesman said the second blast came 15 minutes later, when another parked car bomb exploded in a nearby area, killing two civilians and wounded 15. The target of the attacks was unclear.

A police officer and a doctor later confirmed the casualty figures.

Mosul, 225 miles north-west of Baghdad, has for years been a hub for al-Qaida in Iraq.
