Tiger Woods is today mourning following the death of his father, Earl.

The 74-year-old father of golf’s world number one was described by his son as “my greatest role model”.

“I’m very saddened to share the news of my father’s passing at home early this morning,” said Woods. “My dad was my best friend and greatest role model, and I will miss him deeply.”

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without him.”

Tiger (aged 30) has recently taken time out from his golfing schedule to be with his father who in 2004 looked to have beaten prostate cancer after six years of treatment, only for it to return.

A PGA Tour statement read: “Our hearts and deepest sympathies go out to Tiger and his family during this very sad time.”
