An earthquake in the Pacific Ocean has sent shockwaves as far as Tokyo.

An earthquake in the Pacific Ocean has sent shockwaves as far as Tokyo.

The 7.8 magnitude quake hit deep under water this morning, around 874 kilometres off the Japanese coast.

Buildings on the mainland were shaken but there are no reports of damage so far.

There are also no fears of a tsunami.
