Curtis carded a five-under-par 66 at the Harbour Town Golf Links to move on to eight under at 134 after 36 holes.

He has a one-stroke lead over Heath Slocum and a two-shot advantage over Ted Purdy, who each shot 67s.

Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke carded a 66 to finish in a tie for fourth alongside Kevin Na, Jay Haas, John Huston and Patrick Sheehan on 137.

Another five players are on 138, including Fred Funk and former Masters champion Mark O’Meara.

England’s Ian Poulter is on two under after a second successive 70 while Justin Rose fired a 69 to move up to level par.

Defending champion Davis Love III, who has won this event five times, signed for a 70 after a first-round 72 and is also eight shots behind Curtis.
