A series of bombs exploded in two Bangladesh cities today, killing at least six people, including two suicide bombers and a policeman, officials said.

The alleged bombers in Chittagong courthouse scuffled with police who challenged them.

One of the policemen was also killed in the blasts just before the court opened at 9am (3am Irish time).

Another three people were killed in Gazipur town, where a powerful bomb went off in the compound of Bar Library near a courthouse.

The explosions at both towns occurred at about the same time.

The blast at Gazipur, 20 miles north of national capital Dhaka, wounded dozens of people.

The police guard died from wounds at Chittagong Medical College Hospital, said a doctor.

Another 16 people, some of them critical, are being treated at the hospital inn Chittagong, 135 miles south east of the capital Dhaka.

Bangladesh has been hit by a spate of bombings blamed on banned Islamic militant group Jamatul Mujahideen Bangladesh.

The group seeks to establish harsh Islamic rule in the Muslim-majority Bangladesh, which is governed by secular laws.

Two weeks ago two judges were killed in the southern town of Jhalakathi by a suspected suicide attacker also allegedly linked to the banned group.

Another four people were killed and dozens injured in bomb attacks in August and October.

The attacks targeted government buildings and courts.
