Mulligan: Leitrim county board cuts 'irritating'

Leitrim forward Emlyn Mulligan has let rip at the county board’s intention to cut overnight stays for their travelling teams.

The Leitrim county board have told their convention that representative sides had been asked to drop overnight stays due to the costs incurred, sparking an angry reaction from Mulligan.

“It obviously irritating,” he told Newstalk's Oisin Langan at yesterday’s Irish Independent Sports Awards.

“When I became captain last year, you try to lift the standards and make it as professional as you can.

“When you hear little things like this – it doesn’t happen anywhere else and it’s very annoying to hear about it."

Mulligan will actually miss 2015 because he has taken a career break to travel - a decision that he made before this measure was proposed.

“I just hope some of the lads on the team stand up to that because they deserve a lot better for the effort they’re putting in,” added the former Melvin Gaels clubman who has played with St Brigid’s in Dublin for the last two seasons.

“It will take four-and-a-half hours to get to Wicklow (for Leitrim’s Allianz NFL Division 4 match next February).”

In addition to the Garden County, the Leitrim footballers also face trips to Carlow and Offaly in next year’s league.

Mulligan admitted that such cutbacks knock players’ confidence.
