Thursday’s TV tips

DOCUMENTARY: Operation Stonehenge: What Lies Beneath (BBC2, 8pm)

It seems the only thing most archaeologists can agree on about Stonehenge is that it’s big, really old and pretty much circular.

Other than that – what it was used for, how it was constructed, who brought the stones to the site – a lot is up for debate. At least, that’s how it’s been until now, but is all that about to change?

Recent revolutionary research has just been undertaken which, over the course of just a few years, has yielded some fascinating insights into the site. Drawing on this new data, historians might finally be able to put to bed some of its mysteries, as this two-part programme reveals the five-year project’s findings.

It looks like, finally, some of the long-held mysteries of one of the country’s most enigmatic monuments might be revealed once and for all. About time, too - it’s only been four and a half millennia.

HOME: Design Doctors (RTÉ One, 8.30pm)

Sam’s home was built by her husband Brendan 5 years ago, with her moving in a year after the build.

Brendan had already finished most of the décor and a lot of it wouldn’t have been Sam’s first choice.

For this reason she has hit a wall and doesn’t know how to continue the style of the house throughout.

Working from home as a beautician, Sam is ever aware of the unfinished home and says the unfinished spaces are starting to stress her out.

Design Doctors, is back for a second series with a new dynamic design duo, Aoife Rhattigan and Garry Cohn.

The series gives us a sneak peak into the world of interior design and allows us to see just how the designers create such unique concepts, execute them meticulously, all while giving confidence and inspiration to six desperate homeowners.

DRAMA: Under The Dome (RTÉ Two, 8.30pm)

When temperatures begin to plunge, Sam and Rebecca spring into action to try to save the residents of Chester’s Mill.

Meanwhile, Barbie risks his own life in order to save Julia after a terrible accident.

The second series of Under The Dome continues on RTÉ Two. The massive US drama is based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel about a small town that is suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by a massive transparent dome.

The premiere episode of the second series was written by the bestselling author and executive producer Stephen King, who also makes a cameo appearance, and was filmed on location in Wilmington, N.C. Eddie Cahill and Karla Crome join the cast as series regulars.

COMEDY: Bad Bridesmaid (ITV2, 9pm)

How many brides-to-be do you know who would happily run the risk of ruining their big day?

Fortunately for ITV2, the lure of a dream honeymoon proves more than enough, as this new comedy reality show proves.

It sees six women preparing for their weddings, who try to pass off an undercover actor as a real member of their bridal parties.

However, the plant in question will be doing their best to undermine, annoy and upstage everyone in the run-up to the ceremony, causing chaos at hen parties, fancy dinners and even preparations for the main event. Will the unwitting pals cotton on?

First up, Zoe introduces ’Daisy’ (comedian Anna Morris) to her friends, only to watch her leave a trail of devastation in her wake as she tries to seize control of the design of the bridesmaid dresses, gets outrageously drunk, and announces she’s taking over as maid of honour.

What could possibly go wrong...?

DRAMA: Chasing Shadows (UTV, 9pm)

The first two-parter in this missing persons drama concludes as Sean, on the trail of 16-year-old Taylor, makes an unsettling discovery – it seems she was a member of an online social network which has been linked to several suspected suicides.

Noting that there are several similarities between the deaths, the unpopular copper begins to suspect that a serial killer may be on the loose, posing as a teenage girl in order to prey on vulnerable teens and staging their deaths in a manner that will look like suicides.

Using his unique method of interpreting patterns, can Sean gather the intelligence needed to track down Taylor before it’s too late?

There’s a few aspects of this series so far which seem a tad cliched, but on the whole it’s so well executed we can forgive it almost anything.

It’s thanks largely to the main cast of Reece Shearsmith, Alex Kingston and Noel Clarke that we’re on the edge of our seats throughout.
