Sub Ameobi ensures draw for Newcastle

Shola Ameobi came off the bench to preserve Newcastle’s unbeaten start to the Barclays Premier League season with a last-gasp equaliser which denied Tottenham victory.

The striker smashed home an 86th-minute equaliser just when it looked as though Jermain Defoe had claimed all three points with his 68th-minute strike.

Rafael van der Vaart had put the visitors ahead with a 40th-minute penalty, but Demba Ba’s fifth goal in three games dragged Newcastle back into it three minutes after the restart.

Pardew made his move with 19 minutes remaining when he replaced front two Ba and Best with Ben Arfa and Ameobi, and the pair were soon followed by Davide Santon, who made his senior debut for the club as a 77th-minute replacement for Simpson.

Parker and Tiote both went into the referee’s notebook for untidy challenges as the game entered its final throes with the Magpies rallying once again.

Friedel had to tip Tiote’s well-struck effort over the top with nine minutes remaining, and the keeper did equally well to palm away Ryan Taylor’s free-kick two minutes later.

But with four minutes left to play, Cabaye slipped the ball to Ameobi and he unleashed an unstoppable left-foot shot which flew past Friedel and into the bottom corner to snatch a point, although Krul had to make a fine reaction save to deny Defoe a late winner.
