North Korea 'seizes South Korean fishing boat'

North Korean authorities have seized a South Korean fishing boat in waters off the divided peninsula’s eastern coast, officials in the South said today.

South Korea’s coast guard says the fishermen were questioned today over an alleged violation of the North’s exclusive economic zone. The fishing boat was then taken towards a North Korean port.

The coast guard said it was not clear where exactly the fishing boat was operating when it was seized.

The announcement came amid tension with North Korea over the March sinking of a South Korean warship blamed on Pyongyang.

The North has denied involvement in the sinking.
