The American administrator for Iraq, Paul Bremer, has held emergency talks at the White House in an effort to stabilise the war-torn country.

He met the US Secretary of State Colin Powell and Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld during his surprise visit to Washington.

It is reported there were discussions about speeding up the transfer of power and having an interim Iraqi leader appointed.
