Niall Quinn is hoping to bring a little of the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup camaraderie into the Sunderland dressing room.
The 35-year-old striker, who was recently appointed player-coach at the Stadium of Light after a reshuffle of Peter Reid’s backroom staff, is determined to work on the spirit within the camp in a bid to help shake off the memories of last season’s disappointments.
Quinn, whose role on the pitch may be limited in the final year of his contract, is determined to make a difference off it as he contemplates a new phase in his career.
However, he will first have to come to terms with his changing role after admitting his surprise at learning of Reid’s plans on his return from the Far East, where his distinguished international career drew to a close.
‘‘I was shocked when Peter asked me to get involved with the coaching and I’m looking forward to it,’’ he told the club’s official website, www.safc.com.
‘‘I would not have done this for anyone other than Peter after what he has done for me over the years.
‘‘My main task will be working on team spirit. It is an aspect of football that needs to be right.
‘‘I’ve known this all along, but the World Cup gave me a serious reminder of how important it is.’’
