Turkey, the only Muslim member of NATO, has announced plans to send special forces soldiers to Afghanistan to help train the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance.

Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit made the announcement today, a day after Washington reportedly asked for Turkish help.

Turkey’s special forces have been engaged in a brutal campaign against Kurds in the southeast of the country for 15 years.

The Kurds are based in mountainous conditions similar to those in Afghanistan.
