The search is on for police uniform jackets accidentally given to a charity for the homeless in Ohio.

Police in Columbus and Franklin County have been told to look out for the 22 black nylon jackets.

Only police are allowed to wear the jackets, which were accidentally donated to the Open Shelter in Franklinton.

Police spokesman Lieutenant Gary Lewis says the uniform jackets were mixed up with other coats intended for the homeless.

He said: "If someone is approached by this individual in a jacket, they may get the wrong idea."

Jacket recipients won't be punished unless they misrepresent themselves as police officers, he says.

In total, 48 uniforms were distributed outside the shelter but 26 were recovered shortly after the mistake was noticed.
