Fallen baseball star Darryl Strawberry spent four days on the run smoking crack cocaine with a woman from his Alcoholics Anonymous group, a probation report reveals .

Strawberry, who is under arrest in the psychiatric ward of a Florida hospital, told his probation officer about the four-day bender, said the report.

It was submitted to a judge who will decide if the former New York Yankees idol should go to prison for missing a court-ordered drug-rehabilitation programme.

Probation officer Shelley Tomlinson wrote in the report that Strawberry told her he was picked up from the clinic, Health Care Connections by a woman named Beverly from his AA group.

Beverly was supposed to drive Strawberry to an AA meeting.

‘‘Instead, she began smoking crack cocaine, and he couldn’t resist the temptation,’’ Tomlinson wrote.

‘‘He said she took him to a nearby motel, where there were five men, who had guns and took his jewellery.’’

Strawberry, Beverly and the five gunmen - who were not identified - smoked crack together until the next day, the report said.

Then they all went driving around Tampa, bought more drugs and drove to Orlando - where they dumped Strawberry at a motel, the report said.

It was not clear how or when Strawberry, 39, made it to Daytona Beach, where friends picked him up.

Police spokesman Ron Reeder said he did not know when Strawberry - who is undergoing chemotherapy for colon cancer - would be allowed to leave the hospital.
