Michael Schumacher is convinced he can spoil Fernando Alonso’s home-coming party this weekend in Barcelona and complete a hat-trick of wins.
The Ferrari driver has won the last two races to edge within 13 points of Renault ace Alonso in the standings but is expected to be on the back foot this weekend at a track where Michelin tyres are strong.
Schumacher – who uses Bridgestone tyres – is full of optimism, though, and sees no reason why Ferrari’s recent form cannot continue.
He said: “It is the same distance as every other grand prix; it is 10 points like every other grand prix. We have won the last two, so I would like to make it number three.
“I have no concern on our tyres. We have been good recently – there is no reason to see any problems.
“We know what to expect. I don’t see anything different about this track. I have no doubt on our car side.
“We have stopped the question marks over our package this year, and that is great that we have been rewarded for the effort we have put in.”
Schumacher’s two wins have moved him only four points closer to Alonso in the championship, thanks of the Spaniard’s two second places.
Now Schumacher is hoping one of his rivals can do him a favour and push Alonso further down the grid.
“Naturally I would prefer someone between me and Alonso if I can win. The other way round, I don’t like,” he said.
Team-mate Felipe Massa would be the obvious man to step up and challenge Alonso.
But Schumacher does not expect his own title battle to be high on the Brazilian’s priorities, adding: “He is not there to help me – he is there to help himself.”
Massa has been energised by his first Formula One podium and approaches Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix with new vigour.
The former Sauber driver was criticised earlier in the year by Ferrari boss Jean Todt after several high-profile errors – but he responded impressively.
He is hoping to get used to the taste of podium champagne and expects to challenge again in Barcelona, where his best result is fifth.
“It gives you happiness and a lot more motivation to keep doing the same job,” he said.
“It was very, very important for me; it was fantastic to be on the podium.
“We have improved the car in the last two races, and I think we can be very competitive like we were at Imola and the Nurburgring.”
