Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Gordon Taylor wants the Football League to sell one of their promotion places to the Premiership for £100m (€159m).
He suggests one automatic promotion place and a play-off for the second spot.
And he reckons it would only cost each Premiership club £5m (€7.9m).
Taylor told the Sunday Express: ''The price of relegation from the Premiership is high, as high as £100m (€159m).
"We would be talking about only £5m (€7.9m) per Premiership club and that would make a massive difference to the League's finances after the collapse of ITV Digital.
''The League would be left with one automatic place and then could extend the play-offs for the second spot.''
