US President George W Bush today gave Saddam Hussein 48 hours to leave Iraq or face an invasion.
The US President said if the dictator and his sons stay they will face the "full force and might" of the allied forces "at a time of our choosing."
"We are acting now because the risk of inaction is greater", a grim faced Mr Bush said in a televised speech at the White House.
"The security of the world requires disarming Saddam Hussein now.
Mr Bush's final ultimatum followed the collapse of diplomatic efforts to resolve the Iraq crisis.
The US, Britain and Spain withdrew plans for a new UN resolution in the face of a French threat to veto it.
"The United Nations Security Council has not risen to its responsibility so we will rise to ours," Mr Bush said
