Sixteen people were injured when a passenger train collided with an empty train outside Amsterdam central station.
Dutch rail operator Prorail spokesman Nico Feller said that two people were seriously injured and one was in a critical condition. He denied earlier reports that there were fatalities.
The accident happened yesterday, about 300 yards outside the 19th century railway station, a Dutch landmark.
The engine of a double-decker train collided with an inter-city passenger train, burrowing under the rear carriage which was thrown high into the air.
Feller said there was no information about how the accident happened. The trains’ conductors were being questioned.
Hours after the accident, rescue workers in yellow jackets were still clambering over the two trains and medical helicopters were on standby.
Police closed off the area after the accident in the early evening rush hour, and traffic to and from the station was halted.
