Will Smith fell so in love with his canine co-star on new movie 'I Am Legend', he tried to buy her.

Smith bonded with German Shepherd Abbey, and couldn't bear to be parted from her when the film wrapped.

But owner/trainer Steve Berens, who rescued Abbey from run-down kennel, had no intention of letting her go, even after Smith offered to buy him a new house.

Smith says: "I told him, 'Abbey has to live me please!' I was like, 'Tell me what you need - a house in the hills?' It was painful."

Berens adds: "Abbey's part of my family and lives with us. I've told Will he can have sleepovers any time he wants."
