Felix Trinidad remained on course to become one of boxing’s all-time greats when claiming the WBA middleweight title in New York.

The Puerto Rican became a world champion at a third weight category when stopping William Joppy in the fifth round.

Trinidad, 28, floored the American in the first, fourth and fifth rounds to secure a spectacular win.

He is now scheduled to take part in a unification match against Bernard Hopkins, who retained the IBF title and won the WBC championship by outpointing Keith Holmes last month.

Vernon Forrest claimed a unanimous 12-round decision over Raul Frank to capture the vacant IBF welterweight title.

Forrest, the IBF’s number-one contender, remained unbeaten in 32 fights, with 25 victories inside the distance. Frank fell to 23-4-1.

The ringside judges scored it 118-110, 118-110 and 120-108 for Forrest.
