Saracens star Thomas Castaignede was the shock omission from France’s World Cup squad as versatile three-quarter Brian Liebenberg came in to replace him in the 30-man party.
Castaignede will be put on standby but Liebenberg, originally from South Africa, has been given the nod by France coach Bernard Laporte.
“Brian has a game with his feet, even better than that of Damien Traille. It’s good, that means healthy competition for Damien,” Laporte explained.
“Castaignede was thrown out because he can play in the centre and full-back, but not at wing.
“We wanted a perfect double for Traille and Brian fitted the bill.”
Team manager Jo Maso denied that the move was a surprise, insisting Liebenberg had long been in their minds as France prepare their bid to become the first northern hemisphere side to win rugby's ultimate prize.
Maso said: “We were following him for a long time and he has increased in importance with Stade Francais all season and notably at the end.
“He can replace Damien Traille – he knows the technique of the position and has a kicking game too. It’s a surprise for no-one. He has talent and he is 23.
“He represents the future of the French team.”
