Defeat to Clare initiates Tipp changes

Tipperary's dismal showing against Clare in the Munster senior hurling championship is reflected in the thinking of the managment team for Saturday's All-Ireland qualifier against Laois at Portlaois.

Sweeping changes are the order of the day and many will be surprised to see Tommy Dunne at centre halfback, although he has played in the position many times for his club Toomevara.

Benny Dunne is switched to the halfback line with Thomas Costelloe recalled to the inside backline.

Further upfield, Eddie Enright is also back in the starting line-up at midfield where he partners Eoin Brislane, while in attack, Mark O'Leary is recalled and there is a first championship start for former Kilkenny captain, Denis Byrne, now based in Mullinahone.

Those who suffer in the purge are Brian Horgan, David Kennedy, Noel Morris, Liam Cahill and Larry Corbett.

The team is:

Brendan Cummins (Ballybacon); Thomas Costello (Cappawhite), Paul Curran (Mullinahone), Martin Maher (Borrisoleigh); Benny Dunne (Toomevara), Tommy Dunne (Toomevara), Paul Kelly (Mullinahone); Eddie Enright (Sarsfields), Eoin Brislane (Toomevara); John Carroll (Roscrea), Conor Gleeson (Boherlahan), Denis Byrne (Roscrea), Mark O'Leary (Kilruane); Eoin Kelly (Mullinahone), Denis Byrne (Mullinahone), Brian O'Meara (Mullinahone);

Subs to be finalised later.
