Italian job for British fillies

Menhoubah and Tamarillo will fly the flag for Britain in the Group One Oaks d’Italia at Milan on Sunday.

Menhoubah and Tamarillo will fly the flag for Britain in the Group One Oaks d’Italia at Milan on Sunday.

The duo are among 12 runners declared for the one mile, three furlongs Classic.

Tamarillo, who has rejoined Michael Bell’s yard this season after a spell with Mazin Al Kurdi, and Menhoubah, who is trained by Clive Brittain, both spent the winter racing in Dubai.

The pair clashed in the UAE 1000 Guineas with Menhoubah coming out on top when second behind Catstar with Tamarillo in fifth.

They then met again in the UAE Oaks when Tamarillo won and Menhoubah was third, while both were unplaced in the UAE Derby.

Menhoubah has since run second in the Cheshire Oaks earlier this month and Brittain is confident she can reverse the form with her old rival in Italy.

He said: “Menhoubah’s run in the Cheshire Oaks was very pleasing. Chester is a testing track and she tried to make all the running. In the end, the soft ground probably found her out.

“The track in Milan is easier and the better ground will suit her. The trip is no problem either.”

The home defence is led by Noble Stella, who has been bought by Gary Tanaka this week.

Trained by Bruno Grizzetti, the daughter of Monsun was third behind Groom Tesse in the Group Three Premio Guido Berardelli last year.

Grizzetti said: “She should have a good chance on Sunday. She worked well on Tuesday, she can stay and she has a lot of class.”

Noble Stella will be one of three runners from Grizzetti’s yard with Shoko and Italian 1000 Guineas winner Rumba Loca also taking their chances.

Rumba Loca was 10th in the French 1000 Guineas last Sunday and her trainer added: “She’s fresh and there is no reason why she couldn’t run again on Sunday. In Paris she didn’t have the best of runs.

“As to Shoko, she worked well over nine furlongs and I don’t have too many concerns about her staying.”

Shoko is due to be ridden by Mirco Demuro, with Gabriele Bietolini on Rumba Loca and Silvano Mulas on board Noble Stella.

The field is completed by Loriana, Step Danzer, Bond Deal, Lotta, Oligarchica, Kayak and Australie.
