Police save 120 'Christmas dinner' dogs

Filipino police have rescued 120 dogs and arrested seven people for allegedly planning to sell the animals as Christmas food.

The dogs were recovered when officers pulled over three vans in Baguio, 135 miles north of the capital Manila.

The killing of dogs for food was banned in the Philippines in 1998, but the practice continued in many areas, where the animals are sought as a delicacy and aphrodisiac.

"It is supposed to be a man's best friend, but here they are killed in a most cruel way," said police chief Generoso Bonifacio.

He said police and government officials have rescued about 500 dogs this year alone in Baguio.
