After producing three films for Guy Ritchie - Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch and Swept Away – Matthew Vaughn will make his debut as a director with an adaptation of JJ Connelly’s London crime novel Layer Cake.
The film will star Road To Perdition actor Daniel Craig as a drug dealer who wants to quit while he’s ahead but discovers powerful forces have no intention of letting him go straight, reports the showbusiness newspaper Variety.
The co-stars include Colm Meaney and Michael Gambon.
The film was originally developed for Ritchie but Vaughn stepped in when his partner passed on the project, says the newspaper.
“When Guy decided he didn’t want to do it, I was putting a list together of possible directors, but I had been working on it for two years and it was so in my head that I realised I should do it,” said Vaughn .
Ritchie has instead decided to direct Revolver, a film which he wrote and which is set in the criminal underworld of Las Vegas. It will be the first Ritchie film that Vaughn has not produced.
