Major Cadeaux features among 21 horses to have stood their ground at the forfeit stage for the Juddmonte Lockinge on May 17.
Trained by Richard Hannon, the four-year-old ran out an easy winner of the bet365 Mile at Sandown on Saturday to earn a crack at Newbury’s £200,000 Group One highlight.
Assistant trainer Richard Hannon jnr said: “The Lockinge is the plan at the moment.
“It’s been the plan for a while really and we just thought we’d have a look at the Group Two (at Sandown) and we’ll go on now.
“He came out of Sandown very well and he’s been moving great since.
“He deserved a race like that and I was very impressed with the way he won it - I’m sure it’ll do his confidence a lot of good too.
“I think he proved there that a mile might actually be what he’s wanting as that would probably be the best run of his life.”
Other notable horses still in the Lockinge are Creachadoir, Phoenix Tower, Tariq, Majestic Roi and Rob Roy, who chased home Major Cadeaux at the weekend.
Ramonti and Passager, second and third in last year’s renewal, are among the 10 to have dropped out.
Dark Islander, Dimenticata, Finsceal Beo, Followmyfootsteps, Honoured Guest, Pipedreamer, US Ranger and War Artist were the other defectors.
