Gunmen holding hundreds of hostages in a Moscow theatre today released eight children.
All the youngsters were taken to a crisis headquarters set up nearby.
"The children were released without any conditions," said Dmitry Rogozin, chairman of the Russian parliament’s international affairs committee.
"There is hope that in several hours another group of children will be released."
The children were dressed in winter coats and seemed to be in good health. They appeared to be aged between about seven and 13-years-old.
Russia’s NTV television quoted one girl as saying she was fine but that she was very worried about her mother, who remained inside the theatre.
All the children were being treated by psychiatrists, psychologists and doctors, the Interfax news agency said.
