One man has been rescued by a fishing vessel following the accident, which happened before dawn in international waters, according to Hong Kong’s marine department.

An official said the 320ft cargo vessel was carrying cement and was registered in mainland China.

It is believed to have sunk after colliding with the 985ft container vessel.

A command centre in Guangdong province on the mainland is co-ordinating the search and rescue effort.

Hong Kong’s waterways are frequently crowded with commuter ferries and cruise ships as well as massive container ships serving its busy port.
