The number of new SARS cases in Beijing hospitals is declining, officials said today.
The Chinese capital has reported 112 deaths from severe acute respiratory syndrome – half the mainland’s total.
But the number of new cases admitted by the capital’s hospitals has fallen from 70 to 80 per day last month to 30 to 40 per day over the past week, said Liang Wannian, deputy director-general of the city Health Bureau.
And he said the rate of infection of medical workers – who account for 20% of China’s cases – also has dropped.
“The upward tendency of SARS cases has been effectively checked in Beijing, and the epidemic shows signs of declining,” Liang said.
The announcement came a day after the government announced plans aimed at stemming the economic damage from the outbreak that has killed 224 people on China’s mainland and infected more than 4,600.
